The Individuals Within the Crowd

It is simply part of being human. We look for the places where we fit, for people who share something with us, and for the little signs that tell us we are not alone.

A crowd can give us that feeling.

But as a photographer, I tend to look at crowds in a slightly different way.

I look for the individual.

At the beginning of Reykjavík Pride, there were colours everywhere. Flags, painted faces, remarkable clothes, laughter and thousands of people gathering around something they shared.

Through my camera, however, the crowd kept breaking apart.

One face.
One expression.
One person at a time.

We may find comfort in the things that make us alike.
I think I find beauty in the things that don't.

Because whatever name we give the group, when I look through the camera, I never really see a group.

I see people.

And every single one of them is different.
